The Tall Ships Races
Historical tall
sailing ships are objects of fascination for many people around the world.
A highlight for these fans is the annual Tall Ships Races held at different
locations each year. Viewing the participating replicas of these tall ships
traversing the ocean is a thrill for almost every one who sees them. One of
this yearâ??s races will be held in the Mediterranean Sea, beginning in Volos,
Greece. After stops in Varna, Bulgaria and Istanbul, Turkey, the course
terminates back in Greece at Lavrion. The North Sea will play host to the 2011
event. Starting at Waterford, Ireland, the first leg of the race ends at
Greenock, Scotland. From there, they go to Lerwick, Shetland, then to
Stavanger, Norway and finish up in Halmsted, Sweden.
Primarily
a European event, the purpose of the Tall Ships Races ships races is twofold:
First, to promote international goodwill and friendship and, second, to provide
training in the art of sailing to young people. Although the racing course
usually takes place in Europe, the 2009 races â??reached outâ? across the Atlantic
Ocean to include the North American sea ports of Boston, Massachusetts,
Charleston, South Carolina and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Currently, plans for
future races do not include any North American stops.
